Dealing with the Fear of Abuse of Intellectual Property Rights
in a Globalized Economy
This research discusses the growing concern by developed countries towards the possible adversities arising from a sudden dissemination of protected knowledge to other less mature societies in a globalized economy. In this context, I discuss the risks involving the appropriation of foreign technologies by developing societies that may lack sufficient democratic control or experienced governments, and the political means by which industrialized countries protect themselves from the unpredictable outcomes of this scenario. In particular, this research deals with the possible benefits and disadvantages of strengthening the international system of protection of intellectual property rights, a strategy that has been largely pursued by developed countries in the recent years.
