Near Monochromes
The title, Near Monochromes, refers to the works’ subdued color palette. The photographs are color renderings of things that happen to exist primarily in black and white. Half of the images are of almost nothing: stadium lights describing atmospheric haze, the interiors of unadorned light-boxes, a photographer’s strobes. The other images depict various facets of newspaper production: a blank broadsheet, grey ribbons of newsprint streaming past the camera’s open shutter, stacks of papers wrapped in plastic. Like the light pictures, these images represent their subjects in a way that both gratifies and frustrates photography’s appetite for information.

Twelve images, looping slide projection, 2005–2009
